Apollo’s Troupe at Cahoots Event Space
Having performed more than seventy times across the USA, Canada, and the UK, Frederick Glaysher is returning to Ann Arbor for the first time since the Covid-19 Pandemic with his poignant message of global unity and peace. From October 18 to November 7, he will be giving six performances at Cahoots Event Space, 206 S. Huron Street, four of The Parliament of Poets, and two of Into the Ruins of Modernity.
Glaysher holds two degrees from The University of Michigan, where he studied with the poet Robert Hayden and edited his Collected Prose (UM Press) and Collected Poems (Liveright). He is the author or editor of ten books, including The Parliament of Poets: An Epic Poem (294 pages).
In The Parliament of Poets, appalled by fascism and oligarchy on Mother Earth, Apollo calls all the poets of the nations to the moon to teach them how to create peace.
Among the major characters are Tolstoy, Dante, Black Elk, Du Fu, Faerie Queene, Vyasa, Tagore, Rumi, Job, Borges, Sogolon, and many other poets from around the world. Together, they seek our common humanity, with Don Quixote as Master of Ceremonies.
One of the major themes is the power of women and the female spirit across cultures. The production evokes the ancient Greek rhapsode’s performance of Homer with a modern style of an epic form of dramatic storytelling for a contemporary audience.
The Parliament of Poets celebrates democratic pluralism and intercultural dialogue. Drawing from Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Shintoism, and Indigenous wisdom traditions, the work affirms a shared human inheritance that transcends doctrine, geography, and time.
In the 100-minute solo theatre version, Glaysher blends together epic poetry, world music, and literary and cosmic projections, culminating in a vision of humanity united in global community.
In 2024, Glaysher performed Off-Broadway in NYC, where a Theater Pizzazz reviewer wrote, “A memorable invocation began the show and, like a rocket, The Poet of the Moon is propelled into the Cosmos. With a long wooden staff, Glaysher appears like Prospero, a lasting call for peace and unity, a unique type of optimism.”
The performance invites audiences to experience the timeless truths of human existence, urging us toward a future of unity, peace, and collective purpose.
The main character, The Poet of the Moon, brought to life by Frederick Glaysher, performs this journey as a captivating solo, embodying dozens of characters—each voice representing a facet of the global human spirit. Through Glaysher’s powerful portrayal, we are reminded of the healing power of the arts to bridge divides and bring us closer together as Homo sapiens, human beings.
Into the Ruins of Modernity (60 minutes) weaves together much of Glaysher’s poetry from two other books of poetry speaking to our time, affirming Democracy, international institutions, the UN, NATO, and Allies. Dramatization, not a conventional poetry reading.
