\nThe Thinker<\/em><\/p>\n

Staring into the portal I see humankind
\nstretched out on the rack of this century,
\ngassed in the trenches of Europe,
\nvivisected in the meat shops of Germany,
\nforced to kowtow in China and India,
\nin Africa and the archipelagoes,
\nby the British, the French, the Japanese,
\nby all those intent on empire,
\nintent on the worship of themselves.<\/p>\n

Staring into the portal I see ourselves
\nrevealed in the terror of what we are,
\nof what we cannot face, cannot bear,
\ntry always to ignore,
\nwhile the cost grows greater and greater,
\nwhile like Ugolino we grope over the dead,
\nthe victims of our rapacity,
\nour devouring lust.
\n\u201cO Master, the sense is hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rodin’s Paolo and Francesca… “our devouring lust.” They’re writhing in Hell. Dante saw them there on his visit… wrought them in immortal song, Rodin in immortal bronze.\u00a0White’s translation:<\/p>\n

“There is no greater grief
\nThan to recall a bygone happiness
\nIn present misery….<\/p>\n

While the first spirit told her tale, the other
\nWept with a passionate grief that mastered me;
\nI felt a faintness, as it were of death,
\nAnd like a corpse fell headlong to the ground.”<\/p>\n

Apparently, Dante must have had cause to faint…<\/p>\n

Bronze, of course… The Thinker pondering Hell below… perhaps the greatest art work of the 20th Century. Guernica next comes to mind…<\/p>\n

One of only two or three full exhibitions, worldwide, of Rodin’s The Gates of Hell<\/em>. \u00a0\u200e…awe-inspiring for me. I first saw it in a special exhibition in Detroit in the early 1980s.
